When President Museveni contested in the 1980 elections under the banner of Uganda Patriotic Movement (UPM), his rivals, notably UPC’s Apollo Milton Obote, alleged that he should not be elected because he was not Ugandan.
After falling short in several opinion polls, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party presidential candidate, Nathan Nandala-Mafabi, has mooted a plan to capture the strategic Buganda vote.

Ssuubi 2011 may not have won last year’s elections in Buganda as it had set out, but it has achieved some milestones, one of which is the election of Muwanga Kivumbi as Butambala MP on Wednesday.
Last-minute efforts by President Yoweri Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni were not enough to save the ruling party from yet another by-election loss, as voters in Butambala rejected calls by the NRM party boss to vote for Faisal Ssali Kikulukunyu in order for them to benefit from government programmes.
